We had another successful show at Arborfield on 12th May. A big thank you to all of the visitors, exhibitors and traders for making it an enjoyable day, even the weather stayed bright and sunny.

It is with deep regret to report the death of one of our longest serving members. Les has been battling against Parkinson’s Disease for some years, but unfortunately complications set in over the past few months that Les was unable beat.

Les joined the club in the mid 1970’s and has been a reliable and valued member. Les was always one of our back room boys, he never wanted the glory of being a committee member, but was content to help and support the club on every occasion. Many will remember him at our exhibitions bringing round the bacon rolls and teas.

We will miss the jokes and helpful advice that Les imparted and our sympathies go out to his wife, children and grandchildren.

Loddon Road invited to the White House Show

We have been invited to take Loddon Road to the fourteenth White House Model Railway Show at the White House Community Centre, Hampton, Middlesex on 17th November 2012.

We exhibit at the Kenavon Show

We were invited to display 2 layouts at the Kenavon Exhibition in Reading on 18th February. We took along Loddon-on-the-Fosse (our Somerset and Dorset layout) and St. Mary’s Cove ( Brian Lee’s own layout). The layouts performed well, every one enjoyed looking at the detail Brian has put into his layout, especially the seaside scene.

Loddon-on-the-Fosse was well received despite the fact it not yet finished. Peter Watson ( the driving force behind this layout) was assisted by Andrew Nibb, Ian Perrin and Brian Wilson. Peter spent most of the day discussing the Somerset and Dorset with anyone who showed any interest.

West Wales Wagon Works are producing 2 new wagons to be sold at our show on 12th May 2012.

The OO wagon is to be painted into the colours of Alexander Bros. of Hungerford

The N gauge wagon is to be painted into the colours of Drake & Mount of Bracknell.

Both these companies were local to the club.

2011 Photographic Competition

During our Christmas Social the judging of our first photographic competition took place. Mary Nash, Chairperson of the Woodley Photographic Club, kindly agreed to be the judge and she was assisted by her husband Steven. There were several entries, Mary had a hard job picking the winning ones.

: Mary giving advice on how to improve our photo’s

Before announcing the results she gave advice on improving our photos, pointing out how to compose a picture and taking care with the background as well as the main subject. She chose several photos as being highly commended, the top three were 1st Ian Cull, 2nd David Morton and 3rd Peter Chase.

Our President Peter Chase presented the Jim Hancock Photographic Cup to Ian Cull.

1st Place – Ian Cull with his picture of Railtrack ballast wagons being unloaded. This was on the railway line at the bottom of Ian’s garden.

Club Christmas Social

Club Members working on the Underground Quiz

On Tuesday 20th December we held our Christmas Social Evening. We had a cryptic quiz on London Underground Stations (this was more fun than it sounds) the winning team were presented with a chocolate selection box. We had plenty of eats with mulled wine and soft drinks, 3 wives joined us for the evening. The judging of the photographic competition took place and the results of this are mentioned in a separate posting.

“Model Electronic Railway Group” held inaugural meeting of their Thames Valley Branch.

Ian Bishop is a member of our club and also MERG (Model Electronic Railway Group), he proposed setting up a Thames Valley Branch of MERG and contacted members along the Thames Valley. He asked our club if he could use the side room for their first meeting, to which we readily agreed. About 20 MERG members turned up and had a good discussion on how to proceed with this branch, several MERG kits were also sold. During their tea break they came into the main hall too view some of our layouts. We look forward to their next meeting on 10th January.

Sharptor exhibited at the Whitehouse Exhibition

Chris Marsh was invited to exhibit his layout at the Whitehouse Show, at Hampton on 26th November 2011. He was assisted by Mike Truslove and Andrew Nibb. The layout performed well, Chris is unable to erect the whole layout at home so was pleased with the performance. His main interest is Great Western goods stock and he weathers each truck.
